Introduction

We're on the threshold of a new building period. What in the beginning of the years 1990 took shape with careful pencil lines, has become in 2010 with skilful brush a multicoloured painting: sustainable building.

The past double decennium a big army of followers and new pioneers joined the first desert prophets. Loose initiatives are melted to collaborations, as a result of which the painting has broadend to the properly intended panorama: integral sustainable building.

Innovation and implementation are standing now shoulder to shoulder in sustainable building theories, sustainable building methods, sustainable products, sustainable legislation and sustainable certifications of systems, products and forests, in the final consciousness that we have to offer a future to our offspring. The economic crisis claims many casualties, but in the dripping rain the whole building carousel from planners up to works foremen are on the edge. The summer season of The New Building Era is drawing near.

For the National Wood Day 2010 (Nationale Houtdag 2010) The New Building Era first of all means that the material wood gets new opportunities, or rather takes. Due to its chameleonic character this oldest building material of the world indeed has again and again the capacity to progressing applicabilities. Moreover, continually growing in the trees of immense, sustainable managed forests, deficits will not occur. And the modern homo sapiens for the first time sees wood species, which already existed for centuries, in a different light. To an important initiative the incentive prize Conscious with wood 2010 (Bewust met hout 2010) wil be presented.

The New Building Era clears the way for the inventiveness of architects in order to design opening up new horizons. The current tendency to narrow their role to facade tailors with buttonhole window frames absolutely has to disappear in the garbage container of the past.

The New Building Era opens to advanced computer technics, in service of unthought-of, visionary wood constructions. Every engineering firm has to boarder the specialization engineering with wood.

The New Building Era instructs students in the building assignment of the future. Universities and the Ministry of Education play an essential part in this. Inspiring feature are competitions like the student contest WoodChallenge 2010.

The New Building Era departs from new building technics like Passiv House Building - from now on to name Passiv Wood Building - and cradle to cradle, which definitively prove the force of building habit to be wrong, in new houses as well as in renovation.

The New Building Era is arranged by univocal rules for building methods, detailing and product specifications, which widen the possibilities and not limit them. The quantity of certificates (PassivBuilding Certificate, BREEAM, LEED and the like) needs to stay restricted to sidetrack the brothers Doubt and Confusion.

The New Building Era does not know a hierarchy among building parties anymore - leading to disintegration and high costs of failure -, but embraces the sideline contractorship. Discord becomes concord: everyone is dedicated to the same objective.

The New Building Era shows the achieved results in competitions like Houtprijs 2010 (Houtarchitectuur- en Houtinnovatieprijs) - Wood Award 2010 (Wood Architecture and Wood Innovation Award) They are spring board and source of inspiration for on going renewal.

As a whole the Nationale Houtdag 2010 (National Wood Day 2010) - including Information market - is a naval revue of all these new values, in a principal programme of Het Houtblad and Centrum Hout and a morning parallel programme of the VVNH.
